Photomontage - sketches
After thinking about the political topics I chose and sourcing a few images, I also started looking for inspiration. I found a few photomontages that I thought were really successful. The images that I gravitated towards seemed to have a good balance of identifying a political topic but also maintaining a high level of aesthetics. In my explorations I try to play with the overall composition. Arranging the images so that there will always be a really prominent main image with a lot of smaller supporting images, taking advantage of a figure positive layout. I feel like this will allow me to create a sense of visual hierarchy using scale, which will help to tell the story but also let me put big striking images in the foreground. I am hoping that this will create a real visual impact when someone looks at them.
The three political issues I chose are:
1. Birth Justice: Black and brown women should have the pregnancy they want and deserve but they have been systematically excluded from.
2. Covid Vaccine: Richer countries secure billions of doses even before the drugs pass final clinical trials while poorer countries lag behind.
3. Advantage Blindness: The people at the top have advanced partly through privilege. Race, gender and status all play a role in the advantages or disadvantages you have in life.

I can really see the advantage of sketching, because I felt so strongly about my first few ideas but as I continued to explore new themes started to appear. By the end of the process I can look back at my first few ideas and see just how under developed they were. You can see how this concept below gets developed after I had a chance to step back and think about it.
