Awareness Poster - Sketches

I really got attached the the idea of bringing awareness to gentrification in New York. The research I did gave me a new perspective on the topic, so I decided to stick with that for my awareness poster. I want this poster to be very eye catching so if someone was passing it by on the street they might stop to read it. I also want it to be a little more playful than my last project. After seeing everyones work for the photomontage, I love how the class is using humor to poke fun at the topic/subject.

I explored some ideas that sort of poke fun at the cliched hipster and their trendy little coffee shops that sort of take over the neighborhood. I thought of a skyline that was replaced by small, medium and large coffee cups. Another idea I had was a split screen, like a before and after. One side could be the city skyline the other coffee cups. Then I explored a few wild thoughts maybe there is a key in a museum with a price tag, or a monopoly board and the squares could have the text.

During my explorations this idea of a giant hipster destroying the city like he’s Godzilla kept coming back to me. I actually sketched out a few versions of this idea. This concept is really resonating with me. I think it will lend itself very well to a poster because I can borrow alot of inspiration from Godzilla movie posters. This concept also feels like it hits my criteria of eye catching and (hopefully) funny.
